Thanks for getting in touch! The woman in the portrait is a ‘big flowery’ Miao woman from NW Guizhou province in the south west of China. Nice that you saw my work in Selvedge… I am working in Laos at the moment, going back in September. Have a great trip. Thanks, Tessa

Tessa,
I was in Chiang Mai in March 2011 and bought a poncho like the one the woman in the photo is wearing from a wholesale dealer in hill tribe clothing. It is quite an old and well used poncho. I was unable to learn where it came from except that it was in the north and from China.
Can you tell me where the woman is from and what tribe or ethnic minority?
I was so pleased to see your picture.
Coincidently, I was pursuing your work because I read your piece in Selvedge magazine and am traveling to Vietnam and Laos for 3 months in December 2011. From Selvedge I started to research your website for the Red River Delta villages you visited.
