Hanoi

By Tessa Bunney on 8 December 2008

It is almost six months since we returned from Hanoi, however I called in for three days on my way back from China to see for myself the changes beginning to take place following the announcement of Hanoi’s expansion into a “super city”.

Officially designated on 7th August, the expansion makes Hanoi the 17th largest capital city in the world with 6.2 million people, double the previous population. Hà Tây no longer exists as a separate province.

“This adjustment has sprung from the country’s demand for development opportunities for the new capital.”

Romania

By Tessa Bunney on 22 September 2008

On my recent trip to Romania I visited as many people who appear in the Hand to Mouth book as possible to give them a copy. Sadly one old lady we called in on in Oncesti had died this spring, but here beekeeper Ioan Tivadar and his wife view the book at their bee hives in Glod.

At the moment the Maramures landscape looks much the same as it always has. The old people are still making hay, picking plums and growing vegetables. Everyone we spoke to has at least…

Daylight magazine

A portfolio of images from Hand to Mouth has recently been published in the latest issue of Daylight magazine #7, Agriculture in U.S.

Featuring portfolios by: Michael Ableman, Wout Berger, Tessa Bunney, Jason Houston, Raoul Kramer, Eduardo Martino, Peter Menzel, Brad Phalin, Heinrich Riebesehl, Munem Wasif

Scientists are only now beginning to tell us what many traditional farmers have always known: small crops of vegetables grown in mixed plots can be produced without chemicals, more efficiently and with richer supplies of nutrients than industrially grown crops. This edition of Daylight features a diverse range of photographic representations of agricultural practice…

The end

By Tessa Bunney on 29 April 2008

Although handicraft and small industry lines have developed and provided a good income, all the peasant families in the (Tuong Giang) commune still receive contractual arable land and do farm work. Like in almost all the communes of the Red River Delta, the people here still consider agriculture the base of stability, and arable land a precious asset and the solid mainstay against the volatility of market concerning both the inputs and outputs of non-agricultural lines.

All the household heads interviewed agreed that: Once you live in the countryside, you must be engaged more or less in cultivation. Our forefathers…
